
This is the first issue of PHILOSOPHIA ISLAMICA, the journal of the International Society for Islamic Philosophy (ISIP). Among the objectives of the Society is the promotion of research on Islamic Philosophy and relating Islam’s intellectual and spiritual heritage to our contemporary context.
The INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR ISLAMIC PHILOSOPHY (ISIP) was initially launched at the XXII World Congress of Philosophy held in Seoul, Korea on July 27–29th 2008. On November 15th 2009 Professor Gholamreza Aavani won approval for ISIP as a recognized transnational philosophical organization from the Fedération International des Sociétes Philosophiques (FISP) at its meeting in Moscow. The conception of the Society recognizes that:
- ‘Islamic Philosophy’ embraces logic, the natural sciences, theology, and ethics, as well as epistemic, aesthetic, cosmological, metaphysical and spiritual disciplines within the historical and global context of the civilization of Islam.
- ‘Islamic’ philosophic thought and activity integrates rational, ethical and trans-rational dimensions of knowledge-realization with the human aspiration to apprehend Self, Nature, and the ONE REAL.
- Membership is open to all individuals engaged in research into Islamic Philosophy and allied disciplines promoting the teaching and study of Islamic Philosophy.
